The Lake District is close to my heart as it’s where I had my first permanent job – working in an outdoor centre in Ambleside. I saw enough of Borrowdale to appreciate its Tolkienesque qualities, but it was too far from my base to visit much. So I was delighted to return and explore the area in more detail, as I describe in this feature. The autumn colours were wonderful, with the added drama of the weather rapidly changing between sun and storm.
