For this feature I sailed in a fishing boat off the west coast of Scotland with Hughie Macleod, who’s been catching prawns the same way for the past 30 years using the traditional method of creel baiting. I was asked to write “lyrical, evocative run-on copy packed with lots of original detail about Hughie, his boat, the surroundings, smells, textures and the landscape”.
Ernest magazine had already sent a photographer out with Hughie, so I was only required to enjoy the experience then produce the words. I came back splattered in sea-bed mud and with wonderful memories of watching a pair of white-tailed sea eagles.
The feature appeared in Print Issue 2. Click below to go to the Ernest Journal website.
