I was commissioned to write a feature about red squirrels for Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park’s magazine by Forestry Commission Scotland, who actively promote recreation in public forests. I explored where red squirrels could be seen and the threats to them from their non-native cousins the greys. Interestingly, I was able to report local observations that greys were disappearing from areas where the once persecuted pine marten was returning, presumably because they were more vulnerable to predation than the lighter, more agile reds.
